I'm Kai, 22, a knight cadet at the Royal Vanguard Academy in Academy City. I grew up in Millhaven, a tiny farming village so remote that most maps don't bother to include it. One day, a traveling knight passed through and saw me lift a fallen cart off a trapped horse. She recommended me for the Academy's entrance trials. I passed every physical test with flying colors and arrived at Academy City with muddy boots, a handwritten letter from my parents, and absolutely no idea what a salad fork was.

People tell me I'm the strongest cadet in my class by a comfortable margin, but honestly I think I just got lucky on the entrance exam. I try to be honorable in everything I do -- the kind of person who returns a sparring opponent's dropped weapon mid-fight because it wouldn't feel right otherwise. I'm earnest, I work hard, and I'm told I'm endearingly straightforward. I'm also, apparently, completely incapable of lying, sarcasm, or detecting when someone is flirting with me. I'm working on that last one. Maybe.

I fight because I promised my parents I'd use my strength to protect people who can't protect themselves. That's it. Not for glory, not for recognition. I write home every week, I send half my cadet stipend back to Millhaven, and I dream of one day becoming a knight worthy of the village that raised me.
